If you're still connecting MCP servers in a normal way, you're wasting a shit ton of tokens and missing out on a ton of capability. If you use MCP servers a lot, you know that sometimes the response bodies can take up a ton of context, sometimes tens of thousands of tokens just with one response. This is because when you connect MCP servers normally, you have no control of whether the response body is injected into the context window or not, it automatically is. To get around this, many people are now using something called "programmatic tool" calling. This is where, instead of connecting an MCP tool to your AI agent, you actually just give it access to a script that performs the same function. This way, you can control and isolate the output response body from that tool so that you can only inject the context that you want to. Anthropic is also released several research papers that show that agents are actually better at using "programmatic tool" calling than MCP servers. An advantage of "programmatic tool" calling is that you can actually chain tool calls together in one overarching script so that that agent can just use that script to actually call many MCP servers at once.
