The water ran through tunnels beneath the Colosseum, and into hidden pipes under the arena. Workers pulled up the wooden floor, leaving a wide, open pit below. Then the valves were opened, and the water poured through the pipes, filling the basin deep enough for scaled-down warships to float. People filled the seats, excitedly watching the men fight from the ships in a deadly battle until most of them had died. When the show was over, water rushed out through large drains under the edge and flowed through underground tunnels, emptying the arena within hours. Then workers replaced the wooden floor and spread sand on top, and the Colosseum was ready for the next fight.
