What if English makes us more negative? The way that we talk about emotions is how we get stuck in them. In English, we say, "I am sad. I am depressed. I am anxious. I am angry." But in other languages, the direct translation correlates to their mental well-being. In Arabic, the phrasing is closer to sadness is passing through me. In Russian, it translates to, "To me, it is sad." In Spanish, it connotatively states, "I am in a state of sadness." Can you hear the difference? In English, our emotions become our identity. Whereas in other languages, our emotions are passing states. Other languages talk about their emotions like it's the weather, like a cloud passing through them. It's much healthier. And this isn't just about language or grammar, it is psychology. There is a field called linguistic relativity that studies how the way that we speak actually habitually changes and shapes how we think. Not completely, not deterministically, but subtly. If your language constantly equates your emotions with identity, it may be easier to internalize those temporary states. Instead of "I am experiencing anxiety," we say, "I am anxious." Instead of saying, "The timing isn't right," or, "This moment is misaligned," the way they do in Arabic. We say, "I am wrong," or, "I have failed." Other languages often separates the self from that state, and that small grammatical difference creates distance, and distance creates perspective, and perspective creates resilience. Does this mean that English is evil? No, but structures that we use daily do help shape how we narrow ourselves. So the shift isn't about learning a new language, although it's always good to learn new languages. Maybe it's just about changing one sentence, you know, to try to say instead of "I am sad," to say, "There is sadness now," or, "or like in Russian," to me, "This is sad." Trying different syntax and different language to explain your emotional states and see if that makes a difference.
