How to build an effective skincare routine from scratch. There's really only three basic things you need to do to your skin. Cleansing it, hydrating it, and protecting it. Let's start with nighttime. Step one, cleansing. I double cleanse, and it's just a way to make sure your skin is completely clean and free of any makeup or sunscreen that could break you out. Double cleansing is when you first go in with a cleansing water or a cleansing oil or even both on dry skin with all the makeup and all the SPF still on it. Fioderma sense of biomisolar water is a great example of a good cleansing water. If you have more acne prone skin or want to avoid oils, then you'll like a cleansing water more. And the ordinary squalline cleanser is a good example of a good cleansing oil. You'll probably like this more if you have more dry skin or you wear waterproof eye makeup since oil can melt that all down. But there really is no set category or guideline for who will like which. So you really just have to try and test. The second part of double cleansing is then using a water-based cleanser to fully get your skin clean. Water-based cleansers can be creams, they can be foams, they can be powders or gel. The point of the second cleanse is to remove any residue that was left over from your first step and completely cleanse your skin. Think of it as when you clean your oven or your stove. You spray it, give it a wipe to remove the excess bulk grease. And then you spray it again to get it actually shiny and clean. The Har Har wonder black rice moisture soft cleansing gel is good for every single skin type dry to oily. And something that's super basic and gentle like this should be your main cleanser for most or all days of the week. Now if you have acne or clogged prone skin you might like using a sales like acid cleanser like this in replacement of your normal gentle cleanser a few days a week. Everyone needs this but it's good to have on hand. So now your skin is all clean and we're going to move on to hydrating. The only thing you really need to hydrate your skin is a good moisturizer but you might have heard of ampules, serums, essences and toners. Those can also help hydrate your skin. Using hydrating toners or serums just leads to plumper, glowy or more hydrated skin. The hydrating toner is the April skin Artemisia rice toner. A good hydrating serum is the Onoa Rice 7 Barrier Serum. With moisturizer it's important to get one that you really like that works for your skin type and for the climate that you're in. If you have more oily or clogged prone skin or you live in a more humid climate you're going to love a gel moisturizer. This is the Perito Oat in calming gel cream my absolute favorite. Or if you have more dry skin or you live in a drier, colder climate or it's winter you might like a thicker cream like this. After the moisturizer for night time you're done. For the morning you have options. You can either be the exact same routine that you do at night plus an SPF at the end or you can add or subtract steps depending on what you need. The first one is not cleansing in the morning and this one is one of my recommended changes. Unless you have super oily super greasy skin most people do not need to re cleanse their skin in the morning. So my first step in the morning is just going straight into hydration. I'll either use just a toner or just a serum and then you'll use your moisturizer. You can use the same one that you used at night. You don't need a day cream or a night cream or day time. I'll suggest for most skin to use a gel or more lightweight moisturizer because your last step sunscreen is actually also a hydrator. For oily skin you might want to skip moisturizer entirely and just do maybe a hydrating serum and then straight to sunscreen. This first one is the Summer Friday's Shade Drops. This is a mineral sunscreen which means it uses zinc oxide to protect from the sun. If you have sensitive skin you might like a mineral sunscreen like this one more but the disadvantages of a mineral sunscreen is that sometimes it's not as cosmetically elegant. And the biggest drawback is that unless they're tinted they usually have a white cast. Not this one though. This one is great. No white cast. Then you have your chemical sunscreen which is what I prefer. If you look on the back of the sunscreen label and you don't see titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as the main active ingredient then it's most likely a chemical sunscreen. I prefer these because usually if they're more lightweight they look better under makeup. They have no white cast. That's it for the basic skincare routine. Now let's talk about some things that you could add into your routine and why you might want to add them. You might want to add a vitamin C serum in the daytime. Vitamin C is an antioxidant which means it protects your skin from free radicals and environmental stressors and it also boosts the sun protection power of your sunscreen. The next additions are going to be specific to your skin concerns. And usually they work the best in the form of a toner or a serum. For example if you have dark spots or an uneven skin tone you could add in a serum to target that. This is the chlorophyll discoloration serum from CocoKind. Or if you have really red sensitive inflamed skin you could add in a calming toner. This is the Puritose Soul Wonder Relief Sintelet toner. Or if you have acne or clogged pores you can use a BHA exfoliating toner. There's a lot of different products to target a lot of different skin concerns and you can do way more research to find out what would be the best for you. But that's it. I hope it helps.
