But, after some shaky performances and an eventual injury, Loonon got his chance, and he made the most of it. Throughout the entire Champions League, he was unreal. He saved a penalty against Brawga early in the campaign, and during the round of 16 against Leipzig at Red Bull Arena, he equaled Courtois' record from the 2022 Champions League final by making nine saves in a single match. But, this was just a start. The thing is, in the quarter-final second leg against Manchester City, Loonon made eight crucial saves to keep Madrid alive. When the match went to penalties, he became the hero, stopping two penalty kicks to send Madrid through. By the time Madrid reached the final, many believed Loonon had earned his place as a starting goalkeeper. But then, just before the final, Encholotti made a brutal decision. You see, Courtois had recovered just in time, and despite missing almost entire season, Encholotti made the incredibly tough decision to pick him to start the final over Loonon. Vans were stunned. Loonon, the goalkeeper who had carried Madrid through the entire tournament, was benched for the biggest game of all, and he ended up not playing a single minute of it. But, regardless, Courtois played very well during the final, where Madrid managed to win yet another Champions League.
