Scientists have just made a discovery that breaks one of the fundamental rules of biology, and I'm really excited to tell you about it. One of the fundamental rules of biology that you get taught is that DNA encodes for proteins, specifically DNA encodes for RNA, which encodes for proteins. They call it the central dogma, and it describes the flow of information inside of our bodies. But a brand new discovery breaks this rule. It shows that there is a new way that life can produce DNA. And it produces DNA from proteins. That's right, the most basic rule you ever got taught in biology is sometimes backwards. The discovery was made in bacteria, and it involves a system called DRT3, a system that bacteria use to protect themselves from viruses. And in order to do this, they have to produce new DNA. And one of those DNA strands was produced by a protein. Dequencies in the protein acted as a template for DNA to bind to and create chains. So the protein acted as a blueprint for the DNA and not the other way around. And the second strand of DNA was also made from RNA. So again, his backwards and breaks the rule. But that process has been seen in viruses before. Whereas this new discovery of proteins making DNA breaks this rule even more. And this new system isn't in just one species.
