This new tool can now predict which parts of your DNA might cause serious disease, which could save your life. We have no idea what most of the DNA in our body actually does…just 2% of it makes proteins, and the rest…? For decades we called it “junk DNA”! But now we know it’s actually really important for your health To understand HOW, scientists are using this new tool… I spoke to the head of the team who made this and he told me what we could do if we could EDIT that DNA too… To see that, follow along! #DNA #health #deepmind #Science #Tech

This new tool can now predict which parts of your DNA might cause serious diseases, which could save your life. We have no idea what most of the DNA in our body actually does. We do know that just 2% of our DNA is responsible for making proteins, which do most of the work in ourselves. But this other 98% remained a mystery for decades. Scientists literally called it junk DNA. But now we know it's key to regulating that 2%, which relates to some diseases, and mutations, throughout it, can lead to others. So to actually understand these effects, which could have a huge impact on our health, scientists are turning to this AI model, which can analyze up to a million base pairs at a time, and essentially predict if you make a change to this letter here, would that be harmful and cause disease? Or would it do nothing? I spoke to the head of the team that made this, and he gave me some examples of what we could do if we could change those sections. To see that, follow along.
