What would happen if you drilled a hole straight through the ice in Antarctica and just jumped in? Because the crazy thing is, there's actually something down there. So imagine this. You drop into the hole and at first you're surrounded by snow. And as you keep going down, you begin to see tiny air bubbles trapped inside the ice. Some of them are from the Renaissance. Then deeper down, the air is from the time of ancient Rome. And if you keep going even further, you're literally passing air that was trapped during the last ice age. But the deeper you go, the pressure keeps building. Until about four kilometers down, the ice suddenly turns into water. You've just entered a lake. A massive lake completely trapped under Antarctica's ice. This lake has been sealed off from the rest of the world for about 15 million years. So inside that water, there could be life that evolved completely on its own. Isolated from everything else on Earth. We know the lake is there because scientists bounced radio waves through the ice and saw this perfectly smooth, flat signal, which usually means liquid water. And in 2012, a Russian research team actually drilled all the way down to it. But right before the lake water could rush into the drill hole, they stopped.
