If an alien civilization built the most advanced telescope you could possibly imagine and pointed it at Earth, what would they see? No cities, no people, they'd see dinosaurs, because light takes time to travel. If they're 50 million light years away, the light leaving Earth today won't reach them for 50 million years, so they're not watching our present, they're watching our past. And here's the part that really messes with your head. The exact same thing is happening to us. When you look up at the night sky, you're not seeing stars as they are today. You're seeing them as they were millions, sometimes billions of years ago, depending on how far away they are. Some of those stars, they might not even exist anymore. They exploded, or died, but their light is still traveling, which means every time you look at a star, you're literally looking back in time. The funny part is, we may already be looking at planets with life, with civilizations rising, maybe even beings asking the same questions we are, and that's why.
