You are the universe looking at itself. Somehow, this makes everything and everyone feel smaller and more important at the same time. I'm about to show you the most humbling, beautiful thing I think I've ever seen on the internet. And this is the largest, highest-resolution 3D image of the universe ever made. And it took five years, almost 1,000 researchers from all over the world, and this telescope in Arizona that has 5,000 fiber optic eyes that would scan the sky dot by dot. All these dots, every single dot is a galaxy. And there's 47 million galaxies, which was far more than what researchers originally thought. So your brain can actually comprehend that scale because it's so hard to actually fathom 47 million. Imagine every galaxy is a single grain of sand. The 47 million grains of sand to fill up a bathtub, we are not even one grain because we are just a single planet with a single star. We are just inside one of those little tiny dots. The space between each one of these dots or these galaxies is unbelievably fast. We're talking millions of light years of just nothing between each one of them. 47 million galaxies, and somehow in this one obscure planet, we are the ones that built the telescope to try and perceive and understand this great mystery that is our reality of the universe. Say what you want about the human race. Yes, we are deeply fucked up, but the humanity, the poetry that comes from our species, it comes from this attempt to endeavor to understand why we are here. You know, what we are doing on this one tiny planet, how we can reckon with the meaning and reality of our presence on Earth and in the universe. It's crazy.
