I just learned something incredible and I have to share with you all. You know the parable of the prodigal son. Why does the father run to the son? It was untraditional for a Jewish man to do so and he's breaking tradition to meet the son. That's part of it. That's this much of it. There's an ancient Jewish ritualistic practice called Kazaza. If an individual dishonors their family in some way, shape or form, so they marry outside their culture or they get their inheritance and squander it. If and when they try to come back home, the villagers try to protect the integrity of that family and their entire village. We'll find any kind of empty pottery they have, jars of clay, run to the individual before the individual can make it home and right before his feet they'll smash and shatter the pottery that they had in hand and they'll say this is what you did to us and we hereby sever all ties with you and they wouldn't allow them to come back home. He is now essentially excommunicated. Imagine this in the context of Luke 15. The father sees the son coming from far away and he can imagine the villagers are preparing their pottery. They're looking for what they're going to shatter, what they're going to smash before his son and so the father runs. He runs to meet his son before they can. In this story, love outruns shame. So powerful, so beautiful. Such a great reminder that no matter what you've done or what someone's done to you, his love will always outrun any shame. Thank you Jesus. Thank you God.
