This is Haley, the lash extension addict. She doesn't wake up to sunlight, she wakes up to one of her lashes stuck to her pillow, like it tried to escape her night. She walks into school, blinking in slow motion, like each lash weighs half a pound. Every time she blinks, there's a breeze. Her friends say, "Girl, they look heavy. They're natural." They're natural. Nothing about them is natural. She looks like she's about to fly away. In class, she can't even see the board. Her lashes are basically curtains. When she looks down, they touch her cheek like windshield wipers. She swears she's low maintenance, then shows up with a fresh fill every week like it's a religious ritual. At lunch, she blinks so dramatically the cafeteria lights reflect off her lash glue. People can hear her before they see her. Flap, flap, flap, that's Haley coming. She says, "I only go for a soft, wispy look, but every time she sneezes, three people duck." Haley's not obsessed with lashes. She's building a whole ecosystem on her eyelids.
