Things not to say when calling county zoning and planning. When you're calling county planning or zoning, what you ask matters. For example, don't call and say, can I build a tiny house or live in a shed? Instead, ask, what is the minimum dwelling square footage requirements? Because now you're actually learning the rule. Don't ask, can I live off grid? Ask, what are the restrictions if any regarding power, water, and septic here? Don't ask, can I use a composting toilet? Ask, what are your waste water and septic requirements? Don't ask, can I put a camper here and just live on it on my land? Ask, what are the county rules regarding temporary dwellings during construction? Don't ask, can I start a farm? Ask, what agricultural uses are permitted under these zoning designations? Don't ask, can I have chickens and goats and cows and donkeys? Ask, are there animal density requirements or acreage minimums? Stop telling them your whole plan, you're not trying to get around the rules, you're just trying to understand the framework first so that you could work within it. Because every county is different and the better your questions, the better your answers are going to be.
