What is the difference between sapphic and lesbian? If you liked this video, check out my bio. I've seen this question pop up a few times now, ever since the Black and Orange website introduced a sapphic section. So let's talk about it. Lesbian specifically means a woman or a non-binary person who is only attracted romantically or smetually to other women. Saffic is a much broader and rather term that includes lesbians but also includes lots of other women and women aligned folks who are attracted to women. So for example bisexual or pansexual women. As opposed to the term lesbian, sapphic doesn't mean that you only have to be attracted to women. So all lesbians are sapphics but not all sapphics are lesbians. As always, however, although labels can be helpful in quickly communicating to somebody else what you like, there is no pressure to adopt a label if it doesn't feel right to you. Some people just prefer the term queer, some people like the lesbian or sapphic label, and other people don't like any labels. When it comes to the bedroom, labels matter a whole lot less than having an open conversation about what you like, what you don't like, and making sure that everybody is enthusiastically consenting.
