America is hosting the World Cup tomorrow. It is also at war with one of the teams playing in it. The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Mexico City on June 11th with 48 teams, 104 matches, and over 500 million ticket requests for just 7 million available seats. But three things are threatening to overshadow the entire tournament. First, Iran is scheduled to play all three of its group matches inside the United States in Los Angeles and Seattle. But Iran's football federation has refused to send its team to America after Trump said he could not guarantee their safety. Iran demanded FIFA move its matches to Mexico. FIFA refused. So right now, nobody knows if Iran actually shows up. Second America denied entry to Somalia's referee, Omar Abdelkader Artan, who arrived in Miami with a valid diplomatic passport and a confirmed visa. He was set to become the first Somali referee in World Cup history. He was turned away at the airport and sent home. Third fan festivals across American host cities are being canceled. New York eliminated its fan festival completely. Seattle dramatically cut its plans. German fans are telling reporters they are afraid to travel to America right now.
