my neighbor called the police on my house three times a week for nearly two months. The first time officers showed up and asked if I was keeping dangerous animals in my basement. I laughed because I don't even have a basement. The second time, they came because someone reported screaming coming from my house every night at exactly 2 a.m. I lived alone. The officers searched the property and found nothing. The third time, someone reported that I was storing stolen property in my garage. Again, nothing. At first, I thought it was a prank, but the reports kept coming. Every week a new complaint, suspicious activity, strange visitors, illegal construction. One report even claimed I was digging holes in my backyard after midnight. The strange thing was that every report contained details that sounded believable. Details that someone could only know if they had been watching my house. Then one evening, I came home from work and found a police cruiser parked outside. The officer asked me a question that made my stomach drop. He said, "Do you know anyone who would want you to move away from this neighborhood?" I told him no, but that's when he handed me a copy of the latest complaint. Attached to it was a photograph. A photograph taken through my living room window. Someone had been inside my property. Someone had been watching me closely enough to know exactly when I left and when I came home. For the next week, I barely slept. I checked every lock twice. I installed cameras and three days later, one of those cameras captured something that completely changed the investigation. The person filing the reports wasn't who anyone expected. And the reason they wanted me gone was even worse.
