🎨 “Odysseus and Argus Reunite” by Briton Rivière (1891)
@storiesbehindartTranscript
This is the saddest reunion in Western literature, and Britain Riviera paints it without a single tear. Look closely, that starving hound is Argus, Odysseus' dog, painted by the British master Britain Riviera in 1882. Odysseus has just returned to Ithaca after 20 years at war and sea, disguised as a beggar so thoroughly that his own wife doesn't recognize him, but Argus does. One flick of a tail, one lifted ear, and in Homer's telling, "The moment Argus recognizes his master," he dies. Riviera freezes that instant, the disguise useless, the hero unable to kneel or speak without blowing his cover. 20 years of waiting, honored in silence, loyalty outlived everything else. Who loved harder here? The dog or the man who couldn't cry?
