I feel like I'm banging my head against the wall. He was swimming against the tide. They were armed to the teeth. I'm sure you know and have maybe even used some of these popular proverbs, but have you ever imagined what they might look like in visual form? In 1559, the Dutch master Peter Boygull painted "Neverlandish Proverbs". This painting is positively brimming with literal depictions of popular Dutch sayings and idioms. Some of them are no longer in use, but many of them resemble their English counterparts that we still use today. It is an incredibly fun, amusing and light-hearted painting that could also be described as a visual encyclopedia, a human folly and a human sin set in a topsy-turvy upside-down world. The more time you spend with this painting, the more you realize the complexity of this seemingly simple village scene populated by a wide variety of different characters. Indeed, it's almost like a visual treasure hunt. Boygull actually managed to fill this painting with more than 120 proverbs, which ones can you spot?
