When the Pope refused to annul his marriage, King Henry VIII of England founded his own church. It all began with Henry's obsession with having a son, an heir who would secure the future of his dynasty. But unfortunately for him, his first wife, Catherine of Erigan, gave birth to only a daughter, the future Queen Mary. Convinced that God had punished him with the wrong marriage, Henry demanded a divorce. However, Pope Clement VII firmly refused, as Catherine was the aunt of the Holy Roman Emperor, the most powerful man in Europe at the time. Furious, Henry declared the Pope worthless and simply decided to create his own church, the Anglican church, where he, of course, was the supreme head. He then divorced Catherine and married Anne Bolin. But that marriage didn't last long either. Just three years later, he had her executed. After that, Henry married four more times, executed another wife, and England has remained permanently separated from the Vatican ever since.
