French fries are actually not from France, but instead from Belgium. So why don't we call them Belgium fries? Well, the origin of the word French fry actually dates back to World War One. American soldiers stationed in Belgium were served a delicious fried potatoes, originally called freaks. And since the official language of the Belgian army was French, the American soldiers began to erroneously refer to them as French fries, something we call to the present day.
