This man's wife died because a mountain stood between their village and the nearest doctor. So he picked up a hammer and a chisel and started carving a road straight through it. He was a poor laborer in a tiny village in India and every day his wife would climb over a rocky ridge just to bring him lunch where he worked the fields on the other side. One afternoon she slipped and fell. By the time someone ran to tell him he found her at the bottom covered in blood. The nearest doctor was over 40 miles away and she died before he could get her there. So he sold the family's three goats, bought a hammer, a chisel and a crowbar, walked up to the face of that mountain and started hitting it. The villagers called him a lunatic. His own father told him he was wasting his life. But every night after working the fields, he climbed back up to that ridge and hammered until he couldn't lift his arms. Then did the same thing the next night and the night after that. He quit his job so he could work the mountain full time. His family went hungry for it. A drought hit and the whole village packed up and left. He stayed behind alone, burning firewood on the rock and splashing water on it to crack the stone, then chiseling the rubble away piece by piece. 22 years after he picked up that hammer, he broke through the other side, 360 feet long and 30 feet wide. The same people who who called him a lunatic started calling him Baba, which means holy man.
