I'm gonna show you how to write a short film in just five simple steps. You'd be surprised at how many filmmakers don't know how to do this. So step one is to answer three simple questions. genre, who, and where? Step number two is intention and obstacle. What is your character want and what is stopping them from getting it? This is what the movie is gonna be about. Step number three, the tri-fail cycle. Yes, but, or no, and. So let's say your short film is about a guy trying to run away from a bear. If we use the tri-fail cycle, let's say your guy tries to throw a rock at the bear. Does it work? Yes, but it just makes the bear angrier and it starts chasing him faster. Is he able to outrun the bear? No, and he trips over a log. Now we have a story. Now we're hooked. What's gonna happen? That's where most filmmakers cut the end of their film. He looks up, he sees the bear, about to swipe him, and he rolls. Does it work? Yes, but he rolls right into a ditch and now he's stuck and he's in a worse situation than he was before. What you're doing is you're just stretching the tension of the story like a rubber band until you're finally gonna release it. So step number four, now we're gonna actually finish your film. So we're gonna flip that tri-fail cycle on its head and make it into a try success. He tries to wriggle free and climb up a tree. Does it work? Yes, he's able to get free and he's able to climb up the tree and the bear can't reach him anymore. Or he hits his head on a rock, knocks himself out, and the bear thinks he's dead and leaves him alone. I told you I'd write a good film, right? So step number five is to show the change. So you want to see how things are different at the end than they were at the beginning.
