A Russian warship has opened fire on a British-registered yacht in the English Channel this morning, in an extremely rare and dangerous incident during peacetime. The vessel reportedly drifted offshore into the English Channel during foggy conditions when the Russian warship fired warning shots towards it. We know that tensions between Russia and the United Kingdom appear to be escalating. That Russian warship was in the English channel when a British-registered yacht was seen drifting towards it. There are reports that that Russian warship actually fired upon the British yacht with local media reporting that a couple in their 60s was actually on board the yacht at the time. They weren't injured and the yacht wasn't damaged. Just a couple of days ago, on Sunday, local time, British personnel actually boarded a Russian oil tanker in the English channel as well, claiming that that tanker was going to be used in its war against Ukraine. So you can see that the tensions there are simmering below the surface. At the G7, we have seen both the British Prime Minister and Donald Trump implore Russia to get on board and try to make a deal. So Russia no doubt watching those discussions very closely.
