Why is the prime minister doing this?

Why is Pakistan's Prime Minister suddenly flying to Iran? And why is he then heading straight to Turkey afterwards? And what does this have to do with the Middle East? Well, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shabesh Sharif is making back-to-back visits to both countries this week. His first stop is Iran. When he's there, he will attend the funeral of Iran's former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed by Israel during the war. But that's only part of the visit. Pakistan says that Sharif will also meet with Iran's new leadership to discuss both security issues and the current regional tensions. Then, he'll travel to Turkey. He will meet with Turkey's President Erdogan, where they will discuss security, investments, and trade. But here is why people are paying attention. There's currently a 12% chance that the next U.S. and Iran peace talks are held in Pakistan. Shabesh Sharif will also quote "convey condolences" on behalf of the people and governments of Pakistan to Iran. Officials in Pakistan say they remain dedicated to dialogue and not conflict. So, with tensions across the Middle East still really high, a lot of people will now be watching to see whether these meetings actually lead to something bigger. Which they might.
