Every time Argentina play, we end up having the same conversation. It's never just about the football, it's about the referee, and that's becoming a problem. I'm convinced that once Lionel Messi retires from international football, a lot of these controversial decisions suddenly disappear. Because right now, whether people want to admit it or not, there always seems to be a different standard when Argentina are involved. Now, don't twist that into saying Argentina aren't a fantastic side. They absolutely are. They've got elite players, unbelievable character, and they fight for every single ball. You can see how much they want to win for Messi, and that's something you have to respect. As for Messi himself, it's incredible. He misses another penalty, doesn't hide, asks for the ball again, and ends up deciding the match. That's why he's one of the greatest players we've ever seen, but none of that should stop us questioning the officiating. The penalty they were awarded was incredibly soft. For me, the Argentine player looked for the contact rather than the defender committing a genuine foul. Egypt's disallowed goal, though, was the correct decision because there was a foul in the build-up. I've got absolutely no complaints about that one. What I can't ignore is Argentina's winning goal. Before the counterattack, there was a clear pull on an Egyptian player, then another challenge on Salah inside the area. VR stayed completely silent. Maybe neither incident deserved the penalty. Fine. But if Messi had been the player getting pulled, or if Messi had been in Salah's position, does anyone seriously believe VR wouldn't have stepped in? That's exactly why people keep questioning Argentina's treatment from officials.
