Kora is the same amount of Mary Sue as Ang. Now, before you angrily type at me, please remember it is my birthday. You have to hear me out on my birthday. Kora and Ang are the same level of Mary Sue. That is to say, not at all. Neither one of these characters are Mary Sue's. Both of these characters have flaws. However, there is a distinct difference in the way the fan base talks about each of these characters' flaws. Ang is stubborn. Ang is hard-headed. He is so entirely convinced that the Aernomad's way of living is the only correct way of living. And he takes that approach in everything he does as Avatar, making him less assertive and more passive. But these are often not considered part of his flaws, because his narrative is almost always justifying his stance that he is correct. Meaning, Ang does not have to do much to change and learn and grow in his narrative. He doesn't even have to change his passive stance in order to kill the Fire Lord. He just gets an out. And that's the big difference between Ang and Kora. Kora's mistakes that she makes throughout the show are constantly handled with the weight of all of the long-term consequences of her actions. Whereas, Ang, for the most part, there are no long-term consequences to his mistakes. Yes, he made a mistake when he first learned firebending and burned Katara. But she healed from that. Yes, Ang made a mistake in running away from the Aernomads after finding out he was an Avatar. But if he had stayed, he would have died with the rest of the Aernomads. So here again, we have the narrative justifying his actions. I love Ang and I love Kora. I don't think either one of these characters is better than the other. However, it gets really frustrating when the fan base just constantly treats Ang as though he's perfect and Kora as though she is worthless. And you know what that is? Misogyny. Sorry to be the one to break it to you. Actually, I'm not sorry.
