The mercy tribe lives in southern Ethiopia's Omo Valley. They're one of the most well-known indigenous communities in Africa, especially because of the lip plate worn by some women. The process usually begins during adolescence. A small incision is made in the lower lip and a tiny wooden peg is inserted. Over time, the peg is replaced with larger ones, slowly stretching the lip. Eventually, a clay or wooden plate is placed into the lip. The size can vary from woman to woman and not all mercy women choose to wear one. In mercy culture, the lip plate is connected to beauty, maturity, and cultural identity. It can also represent a woman's readiness for marriage and her connection to tradition. From the outside, people often misunderstand this practice, but within the community, it's not forced or shameful. It's a personal and cultural choice rooted in history.
