My sister called CPS because my kids played outside. She's the one who got arrested instead. My sister Melissa has always believed she knew how everyone else should live. She'd walk into our house and comment on everything, the way the kids folded laundry, the food in the fridge, the scratches on the kitchen floor from our dog. She acted like every little thing was evidence that my wife and I were failing as parents. My kids are 9 and 11. We live in a quiet neighborhood outside Columbus where kids still ride bikes, build forts, and disappear into the woods behind our street until dinner. Half the families around us do the same thing. Melissa hated it. You just let them wander, she'd ask. They're with five other neighborhood kids, I'd tell her. They've got watches. They check in every hour. She'd shake her head like we'd admit it to something criminal. Our parents always defended her. She's just worried, mom would say. No, Melissa wasn't worried. The case worker introduced herself politely and explained they'd received an anonymous report claiming our children were routinely abandoned for hours, left without food and forced to care for themselves. My wife just stared. The worker looked around our house, talked to both kids separately, checked the pantry, asked about school, neighbors, routines, everything. Our kids answered honestly. They talked about homework, soccer practice, camping trips, movie nights, and helping me grill burgers on weekends. The case worker smiled more as the visit went on. Before leaving, she apologized. It's pretty clear your children are safe. The investigation closed almost immediately. I figured that would be the end of it. It wasn't. One of our neighbors mentioned seeing Melissa taking pictures of our house and recording videos from across the street several times over the previous month. Another neighbor had security cameras that caught her parking nearby almost every afternoon. She wasn't checking on the kids. She was building a case and another surprise showed up. A detective called asking if I'd be willing to answer a few questions. Apparently...
