This is about one of the most perilous ways to school in the world. In the mountainous regions of Nepal, a group of students lead such a life at six in the morning. Young boys wake up from their slumber and spend two hours helping their fathers with farm work. By eight o'clock, they embark on a journey from the mountaintop to the foot of a hill. Due to the rugged mountain paths, a slight misstep could result in a fall down the mountain side. The trail takes them about an hour to walk. The line for school grows bigger and bigger along the way. They have to look out for each other and deal with any dangers they may encounter on the way. After about an hour or so, the students have finally reached the foot of the mountain and they're about to face a new challenge because the school is on the opposite side of the river which is about 60 meters wide and there's no bridge built here. So this basket is their means of crossing the river. On two steel cables is what the children use to cross the river. It's a very dangerous process. The current in the river is very strong. Every year many people drown crossing the river. The basket stops in the middle because of gravity. So the kids need to climb on top of the cables and push the basket as hard as they can. But these cables are covered with rusty spikes. Every time you push those spikes will dig into the palm of your hand. If you're not lucky you'll get tetanus. When they get to the other side of the river, they'll have to hitchhike to get to school. That's a matter of luck too. Sometimes they reach out for a ride and no one will take them. They get to school around 10 a.m. Teachers say that most of the children from the mountains don't get good grades because they can't concentrate. City students can walk to school in a few minutes. But these students have to walk over mountains and across rivers and two hours of farm work in the morning. That four hour round trip to school takes all their strength because they spend all their time in class thinking about one thing and that's how they're going to get home after school.
