It's not your partner's job to figure out how you feel. It's your job to tell them. We've romanticized mind-reading, and it ruins relationships. Because there's this idea that if they really loved you, they just know they'd notice you shouldn't have to say it. So you go quiet and wait for them to catch it, and they don't because they're a person and not a psychic. And now you're heard about the original thing plus the fact that they missed it. That's a test nobody was told they were taking. And I get why we do it, saying it out loud is vulnerable, but it's easier to be disappointed than to be direct. Because if you never asked, you can't be rejected. But every relationship that works runs on someone willing to say the awkward thing first. Nobody can meet a need they were never told about, use words. It may be less romantic, but it actually works.
