People who go cold, who stop responding, who are physically there but completely unreachable, that is not them being difficult, that is not them punishing you. According to psychology, that is called emotional shutdown. It is one of the most misunderstood responses a human being can have. Here's what's actually happening inside that person. Their nervous system got so overwhelmed by stress, by pain, that it did the only thing it knew how to do. This is what psychologists call "dorsal vagal shutdown". Your nervous system hits its limit and shuts emotional responses down completely. Not as a choice, as a survival mechanism. It powered down, like a circuit breaker tripping to protect the whole system from blowing out. They didn't choose this, until one day you realized you haven't actually felt anything in weeks. You sit with people you love and feel nothing. You hear good news and feel nothing. You know you should be happy and you just can't get there. People think you're cold, distant, checked out. But inside that person is not cold at all. They are exhausted, they are overwhelmed. Their mind is doing the only thing it learned to do when the pain got too big to carry. If someone in your life has gone quiet like this, don't push them away. That silence is not indifference. That is a person's mind protecting itself the only way it knows how.
