Three signs of emotional safety and a serious or long-term relationship. Number one, your feelings get taken seriously. So instead of bringing something to your partner and they minimize it or try and fix it or get defensive, they lean in and want to hear about where you're coming from and how they can support you and whatever it is you might be feeling. Number two, you don't feel like you have to perform. You don't feel like you have to put on a face so that you can sort of manage their impression of you. You feel like you can just be yourself, whether that's the best version of you or the not so great version of you. You can be authentic to you at your core. You feel like they encourage your continued growth. You don't feel like you have to shrink yourself into a lesser version of you. Maybe a tone-down version of you for them or for the relationship. Lastly number three, you can disagree without fear of the relationship falling apart and when you do disagree, it's respectful. You both hear each other and after the fact, repair happens. Like you both want to come back together and repair things and they create a safe space for that to happen. Meaning they hear your side of things. Even if they don't agree with you, they hear you out and they want to understand your perspective. They allow you to share whatever it is you need to share. In conflict, there's no walking on eggshells, there's no fear of punishment or retaliation, there's no fear of them just going completely quiet and ignoring you for the next days or weeks. Like the issue that you were having actually gets solved and you can find a common ground versus moving further away from each other.
