I built an agentic AI trading system for a quant hedge fund, not a trading bot, an AI operating layer across research, risk, portfolio construction, and execution. And to understand what it actually does, you have to understand how a quant fund works. A quant fund isn't one trading algorithm. It's 10 stages running as a continuous loop. Data comes in and gets stored point in time. Research turns that data into a signal. Risk turns the signal into a position. The pre-trade gate decides whether it can actually trade. Execution fills it. Ops, books it. Performance measures it. Let's take a look. One, signal research and alpha discovery. Research. Cloud reads the filings, the alt data, and the news, and writes the spec. It then builds features point in time. The back test only sees what was knowable that day. It then tests it in Nautilus with Borough and Market Impact priced in. Then a human turns it on. Two, portfolio construction, and risk. Then risk. A signal isn't a trade. It's a forecast. The factor model, Axioma, MSCI-BARA, splits it into exposures. Most new alpha turns out to be momentum you already own. Then the optimizer solves alpha minus cost inside the CIO's limits. Out comes a position size. Three, pre-trade gate and execution. Then execution. The gate checks the restricted list. Your limits. Your Borough blocked orders never reach a venue. Clear. It routes through the OMS Bloomberg EMSX. Charles River never around it. Then the fills get measured against a rival price. And that re-wates tomorrow's router. What I built is the layer on top.
