In 1986, a woman from Chicago, Illinois, returns home after running some errands. As she steps into the living room, she notices a few things out of place. She hesitates, questioning her own perception. Although she was institutionalized in the past, she'd been taking her medication consistently and was discharged nearly a year ago. She tries to ignore the feeling, but her heart stops when she spots footprints around the apartment. She calls the police, reporting a break-in, but the dispatcher is dismissive, giving her a case number with no promise of a follow-up. A year passes and life goes on as usual. By now, she's convinced it was all in her head. But as she drifts to sleep, soft whispers begin to echo from the bathroom. She's heard voices before, but tonight they feel more real than ever. For the first time in years, she finds herself talking back, quietly pleading for them to stop, but they don't. She quickly grows belligerent, shouting for the voices to leave her alone, when a sudden knock from within stops her cold. This time, she's certain it's real. With trembling fingers, she dials the police. Every press shake you with mounting dread. She tries to explain the situation to the dispatcher, but growing with fear she stumbles over her words. Suddenly pounding erupts from behind the medicine cabinet, rattling the walls as she screams, he's coming out of the mirror.
