Meet Tom, a lumberjack beaver. Today, he is cutting timber with his sharp front teeth, helping to build a dam with his misses. Around here, a half-built dam is not good enough for Mrs. Beaver. She is running a tight ship, and nobody gets to sit this one out. The whole family joins in, hauling branches, dragging fallen wood, and packing mud into the growing barrier. With every branch packed into place, the dam rises, and the narrow stream begins to slow. Water backs up behind the barrier, spreading slowly across the mossy forest floor. Soon, the new pond begins to fill with life. Ducklings follow their mother through the calm shallows. Waterfowl gather among the flooded trees, feeding where insects and aquatic plants thrive.
