I'd stayed up late playing video games instead of studying, so I pulled the fire alarm three minutes before my math test. Everybody had to evacuate the school, and my friend James ran up to me in the parking lot. Dude, you're a legend! My heart was still pounding, but I grinned. Wasn't even scared. Nobody caught me because there wasn't a camera facing that fire alarm. And news spread through the entire school. On Monday, I watched from across the hall as a girl yanked the alarm before her Spanish test. Then walked outside grinning, proud of herself. James nudged me. You started something. I couldn't stop smiling. Tuesday, two kids pulled it back to back before separate midterm exams, so half the school ended up standing outside in the rain most of the day. On Wednesday, when the fire trucks pulled up for the fourth time that week, the principal's voice crackled over the intercom. Anyone who pulls the fire alarm when there isn't a fire will be suspended. But nobody stopped, because they couldn't prove who was doing it without a camera. On Thursday, we had a school assembly, and a real fire chief stood at the front. Arms crossed. This isn't a joke anymore. Someone could die waiting for us during a real fire. I felt a flicker of guilt sitting there, but it passed the second the bell rang for lunch. Then on Friday, James dared me to pull the fire alarm again before our science test. Bet you won't. I smirked. Watch me. I grabbed the handle, but before I could pull it, blue dye exploded all over my hand. Ten seconds later, two teachers rounded the corner and grabbed me by my very blue wrist. Gotcha. It turns out they had rigged the fire alarm with blue dye to catch the next person who pulled it. I got suspended for a week, and when I got back to school, my science teacher handed me a makeup test that was twice as hard.
