"I told my four-year-old daughter, Ali, know, when she asked for a Snickers bar at the grocery store. So she spun around to the woman behind us in line and screamed at the top of her lungs. "Help me! He isn't my daddy!" The woman's eyes went wide, and she grabbed Ali's arm, yanking her back protectively. "Oh my god! She already had her phone out, dialing 911. I swear she's my daughter. She's just mad about candy." Panic shot through me, as she ignored every word I said. "Send the police right now. This man kidnapped a little girl. I was really about to end up in handcuffs over a Snickers bar." A manager heard the screaming and ran straight over. "Sir, step over here until the police arrive. This is ridiculous. She's my daughter." Ali kept sobbing. He took me from my real house. My face burned with embarrassment as a crowd formed around us. One woman filming with her phone raised high. "Everybody look at this creep, and he's ginger. When the police arrived, Ali was still sniffling, fully committed to the lie. He keeps me in a cage. I put my head in my hands. Ali, we don't even have a cage. She ignored me. And he only feeds me expired yogurt. I threw up my hands." That happened one time, and it wasn't even that expired. The officer stepped toward me. A stern look on his face. "Sir, show me your ID and proof this is your daughter right now. My stomach twisted. I had nothing but my wallet. No proof Ali was mine at all. That's when the officer grabbed my wrists and clicked the cuffs shut around them before I could say another word. The manager knelt next to Ali. Sweetie, is there anything I could get you? Any snack? Ali's whole face lit up instantly. Can I have a Snickers? Of course. He grabbed one and handed it to her. She tore it open, took a huge bite, and sighed happily. Okay, I'm good now. That's my dad. I was just mad he wouldn't let me have candy. The officer froze, then slowly reached for his keys. Wait, this was all over a Snickers? She nodded happily, already halfway through her second bite, and relief crashed through me. The officer uncuffed me right there in the middle of the crowd, muttering an apology under his breath. You're free to go, sir. I knelt down next to Ali, still chewing happily on her second bite. Enjoy that Snickers, because it's the last one you'll ever get.
