I was taking pictures of a penguin at the South Pole when suddenly it squeaked and my phone slipped out of my glove. It hit the ice and started sliding, and my chest went cold. Because that phone's GPS was the only way back to camp. I saw where the phone was sliding to, and saw a hole in the ice that made me clench my teeth. Because if it went into that hole, I would never get it back. So I scrambled up and ran full speed screaming, "No, but the ice was glass." My boots couldn't grip, and the phone kept gliding just out of reach. I finally managed to catch up to it and grinned, but when I dove forward, my fingers grazed the case and pushed it forward so it dropped right through the hole in the ice. I hung my head over the edge and watched my screen glowing as it sank into black water, and my hand started shaking. I cried, "Someone please help me." Because anything that goes in that water stays in that water, and my GPS was gone. But I suddenly stood up because what if someone's body was literally built for swimming in the freezing cold? But then I remembered that mine wasn't, so I sat back down. I was slapping the ice and losing my mind, because camp was six miles in a direction I couldn't point at. But that's when something waddled up beside me. The same penguin that I'd been taking pictures of had slid under my arm, and was patting my leg with his flipper. I grabbed his little shoulders, "Buddy, please, that phone is my whole life." He gave me one slow nod like he was saying, "I got this twin," and dove in before I could react. I leaned over the hole with my breath fogging the water, and every second of black sank my hope deeper. Then the water exploded, and the penguin shot out of the water like a superhero, slapping my dripping phone into my hands. The one body built for that water had just gone and gotten my phone back, answering my wishes exactly. I wiped the screen, and the GPS still worked, so I hugged the penguin close to my chest, and we both started squeaking together. I go back every year now to take more pictures with him, and I've named him Phonius.
