The nursing school paid me $40 an hour to lie on a table and act like my stomach hurt, so I didn't say anything when it actually started to. My card said the pain was on my left side and got worse under pressure. The woman doing my bruise makeup hardly painted anything. I'm just touching up the one from last time. I had a pit in my stomach because there hadn't been a last time. An instructor with a clipboard walked six students in, and the first girl pressed her hand into my side and wrote something down before she moved on. My side started to burn, but I told myself it was in my head from getting too into the role. As soon as I sat up and the room slid sideways and my shirt soaked through, I knew something was actually wrong, but nobody in there was going to see that because I was supposed to be acting. I had to get one person in that room to believe me, or I was going to die on that table. I'm not acting anymore. I'm in real pain. The instructor wrote something down without lifting his head. Don't break character. The next student came at my side with both hands, so I caught her wrist before she could get to me. She pressed down anyway, right on the bruise that hadn't needed any paint. The pain is supposed to get worse under pressure, right? The instructor nodded once. I moaned. Somebody hit me a few days ago. It's from that. It's a real injury. She thanked me for the detail and wrote it into the case history, like I'd handed her a present before walking off. I got halfway up off the table and begged the instructor to help me, but he turned my whole body into the lesson. See how he's committing? A real patient does exactly this. You can't let it throw you. I tried to leave to get help on my own, but my legs quit halfway to the door. The first girl got me under the arms and put me back on the table. You're the best actor they've ever sent us. I tried to respond, but my mouth wouldn't make words. I grabbed the first girl's hand and pinned it against my side until my arm shook. She sighed, "Congrats, kid. You have a spleen." Half the room laughed and the instructor grunted. She tried to take her hand back, but I wouldn't let her, so she felt my other side. Her whole body went still. She grabbed the instructor's sleeve, but he pulled his arm away, reset the patient and let the next student take a turn. She dragged my shirt up to my chest and showed the bruise to everybody. No, you need to check him. This isn't right. He put two fingers where her hand had been, and his clipboard clattered to the floor. Cold went up my arms, and my teeth started knocking together. His spleen is torn and he's bleeding into his stomach. I turned my head far enough to find her eyes. You are the best student in the class. I stared at that the instructor, I want to raise.
