In the book Flatland, you can read memoirs from a square who lives on a two-dimensional plane. Square's house is a pentagon, but he doesn't see it as such. To him, all things look like lines of varying size, but he can feel the vertices and determine the angle. One day, a sphere visits Flatland from the third dimension. Square is a ghast to hear that sphere can see inside of him. Square can't imagine a third dimension. How can one move in the direction of their insides, he asks? Square also wonders if it's true, then what comes next is there a fourth dimension? Sphere says no, that's ridiculous, but sphere is having the same trouble as square. She simply cannot imagine dimensions above her own.
