The James Webb Space Telescope may be the best telescope we've ever had, but let's not forget our humble beginnings. These are Galileo's first drawings of the moon, made after observing it through his telescope in 1609, and these are the drawings he made of the stars he could see. Galileo improved upon the design of a spyglass, pointing it towards the sky instead of that other people. His device was the first to be given the name telescope, from the Greek Tilly Scopus, which is far seeing, but I wonder if even Galileo could have guessed just how far we would soon be able to see.
