Two monks are walking home when they reach a stretch of road that is turned into deep mud. At the edge stands a woman holding her dress out of the dirt, unable to cross. Without a word, the older monk walks over, picks her up, carries her through the mud, and sets her safely on the dry side. Then he simply keeps walking. The younger monk follows. He doesn't say anything, but his jaw is tight. They walk past the fields. They walk through the village. They walk up the hill. He silently seeds the entire way. That night he cannot hold it in any longer. He snaps, "We have taken a vow. We are not allowed to touch women, but you picked her up. You carried her." The older monk looks at him calmly and says, "Brother, I set her down this morning at the side of the road. Why are you still carrying her?" You see, in life, the thing that hurts you often takes only four seconds to happen. A sharper market dinner. A cold look across the table. A text message ending with a harsh full stop. Four seconds of hurt. Yet you carry it home. You carry it into bed. You might even be carrying it right now, a whole week later. Put it down exactly where it happened.
