The 2D creature only sees a flat line of vision. She doesn't see the world from above, like we can. Instead, she just sees a line. Luckily, a thin fog in the air means that objects further away appear dimmer. That helps a lot with distinguishing shapes and she can always use touch as well. For example, if she looked at the corner of the safe, it would appear brighter in the middle and get dim towards the edges. If she opened it up and looked inside the safe, this is what it would look like with gems inside. And this is what she would see if she was looking at a safe without gems in it.
