For a bull elephant to mate, it must not only defeat rival males, but also gain the approval of the herd's matriarch. One female elephant in the herd has come into heat and all elephants closely watch the outcome of the coming fight. Two bulls clash violently over the receptive female, risking everything for a chance to reproduce. Only the strongest bull earns the right to pass on its genes, and the herd will decide whether to accept the winner. After a brutal battle of clashing tusks and bodies, the more powerful bull chases its rival away, claiming mating rights to the female. Yet one vital step remains, winning the matriarch's approval. The bull enters the herd calmly to seek the female in heat. It behaves gently and respectfully, taking great care not to harm the young calves nearby. To further win over the matriarch, it performs a special gesture to win the herd's favor. It wraps its trunk around a tree and snaps it clean in half. The rest of the herd gathers to feed on its leaves. This is no ordinary tree. Its rare leaves carry natural healing properties. The bull offers the whole tree as a gift to the herd. Once the matriarch accepts its offering, the bull finds the female and mates with her. When the breeding is done, the bull slips away quietly, returning to its solitary wandering life.
