🦴 There are four tiny glands sitting behind your thyroid that quietly control your calcium levels — and most people have never heard of them. They're called the parathyroid glands, and they release a hormone that does something really clever: it signals the kidneys to activate vitamin D. And here's why that matters — activated vitamin D is what allows your body to actually absorb calcium. Without it, your body can only take in a fraction of the calcium you consume. 💡 So it's a chain reaction: parathyroid hormone → activates vitamin D → vitamin D unlocks calcium absorption. Your bones are depending on all three working together. 🙌 Follow for more anatomical awesomeness! #tiktoklearningcampaign #anatomy #humananatomy #parathyroid #thyroid #calcium #vitamind #bonehealth #hormones #healthfacts #physiology #anatomyandphysiology #didyouknow #nutrition #medschool #learnontiktok

Here is the trachea, or what we refer to as the windpipe, and here above the trachea, you can see the larynx, which we nicknamed the Adam's apple. So, me touching right here would be the same as me touching right here on myself. But I want to reference this structure below the larynx called the thyroid gland. Now attached to the posterior aspect of the thyroid gland are these tiny little structures called parathyroid glands. You can't really see them on this dissection, but the parathyroid glands secrete parathyroid hormone. And parathyroid hormone plays a major role in regulating calcium levels within the bloodstream. One of the ways it does this is by signaling to the kidneys to complete that final activation step of vitamin D that we just talked about. But you might be initially thinking here, well, that was parathyroid hormone activating vitamin D. What does that have to do with calcium? Well, a very important function of vitamin D specifically, this now activated form 125 dihydroxycholic acid for all, is to help with the absorption of calcium. Without it, you can only absorb a limited amount of calcium.
