I finally released the last little crumb of guilt about traveling over Christmas instead of piling up expensive plastic under a tree. Being in Tahiti, talking with another Black mama who’s been holiday traveling with her daughters for years, confirmed it: this is the cheat code. We don’t spend our money making corporations richer—we spend it on ease. On being fed, rested, held, and expanded. On letting our daughters see Black women abroad, relaxed, curious, catered to, and joyful. New Year’s Eve with my girls in another country > anything wrapped in plastic coated paper. Shoutout to Coach Dad, who put me onto this iteration of the soft life over 12 years ago.
