Some interviewers and companies will bend over backwards just to avoid salary discussions. But why? Here are some of the reasons we’ve seen/heard: - they didn’t do their research and don’t know the budget - they want to see what the candidate says first - they subscribe to the outdated “we don’t discuss money” and HR handles that mentality Transparency around salary saves companies and candidates time and frustration. (And we’re not just talking about a legally required overly wide range salary in a job description) Hiring teams should be prepared to ACTUALLY discuss salary and if you can’t than be transparent about why you can’t. Can you tell me about your salary range? I mean, that's a little forward to ask so early in the process, don't you think? I mean, I'd rather just see how your job aligns with my skill set and experience. Right, but I'd like to know for generally a line before we continue to invest time. Can you just give me a fall part range? Sure, it's competitive with the market of other candidates who skills are similar to mine. Okay, that's not exactly specific enough. Specific? Okay, but you didn't put the salary range in your job description, so I was just assuming that you liked the mystery at all. Okay, well, not necessarily. Since our state doesn't require putting the salary range in our posting, we don't do it. It's mainly because we don't want to accidentally overpay someone for this job. See, I'm concerned about accidentally being underpaid for this job. Okay, well, so I'm just trying to avoid wasting three rounds of interview time and not knowing if our budget is aligned with your ideal salary. You know what, you're right. Wouldn't it be better if we were just upfront about pay from the very, very start? I mean, it's literally why we're here to make money.
