How to say "have a good day in Russian" and the common mistake my students make is they just say "dобрый день" But "dобрый день" is a greeting and it means "good afternoon" or "literally" "good day" Now "have a good day" is "хорошого дня" which literally is "good day" in the genitive case By the way, in the greeting "dобрый день" "dобрый" literally means "kind" So "dобрый день" is literally "kind day" but of course we translated it as "good afternoon" Now, why is "have a good day" "хорошого дня" "in genitive"? Well, because the full expression is "желаю" "хорошого дня" "wishing you a good day" And the Russian verb "желать" to "wish" is typically followed by "genitive" But generally we all meet the word "wish" and just say "хорошого дня" Have a good day and the exact same logic applies to "good night" "спокойный ночи" which is also "genitive" Because unlike "доброе утро" and "добрый день" there are greetings and use the "nominative" спокойно ночи is a wish and hands is used in genitive. Хорошего дня, друзья!
