There are trillions of little, tiny aliens living inside you that are in control of your appetite, your cravings, your mood. They're in control of how you're feeling right now. Let me show you. These are two identical twins, Hugo and Ross. They're genetically identical. Yet when they're fed the exact same food, the blood sugar response they have to those foods is drastically different. Hmm, that's strange. Same genetics, same diet, why the difference. There are actually hundreds of sets of genetically identical twins being studied in the UK. They're known as the best studied people on the planet because they're constantly undergoing studies to find out why some are tall and short. Why some are fat and thin. Why some have sweet tooth and some have salt tooth. And it all starts right here in the gut. Each of us has more than 30 trillion living organisms living inside of us. These are not human cells. They're bacteria or microbes. These bacteria make up an ecosystem that is absolutely critical to our overall health. When this ecosystem is damaged, it results in a condition called dysbiosis. And I'm guessing most people have never heard of this. In the United States, only 12% of American adults are metabolically healthy. And still more, have mental health problems, digestive health problems, and lots of other health problems. Why are we all getting so sick? Well, if 88% of people have this problem, perhaps it's not an individual problem. It's a systemic problem. Regardless of genetics, if our microbiome is suffering, if we have dysbiosis, it can be correlated to lots of other problems. Metabolic problems, respiratory problems, mental health problems, cardiovascular problems, skin problems, all kinds of problems. The good news is, there's something we can do about it. And if we make a few simple changes, we can start to see improvement quite rapidly. Consider the fact that just 40, 50 years ago, we didn't have a metabolic health crisis or a mental health crisis. So what happened? Well, we used to have a diet that was rich, insoluble and insoluble plant fibers. Fiber is the primary food source for the bacteria living in our gut. And as long as they're getting fed, they're happy and thriving. As food makers have progressively removed fiber from the American diet, our microbiomes have suffered and now we're paying for it. This is brain number one and this is brain number two. And there are more than 500 million nerves in our gut sending messages to our brain. Only when our microbes aren't healthy, those messages get interrupted. When our microbes are not getting the fiber that they need, the ecosystem breaks down. It messes with our hormones, it messes with our mood, our behavior, our cravings, all of that. Fiber also does some other wonderful things, like helping you manage your blood sugar and insulin levels. Fiber is also extremely satiating, which is one of the reasons why food processors take fiber out of the food because we'll eat and eat and eat and not feel full. Now, the key to feeding our microbes is to give them diverse sources of fiber. So many people will go to the store and they'll buy some metamusel or some benefiber or something with one source of fiber in it. And that is not what our microbes need. So we must eat a wide array of veggies, fruits, seeds, herbs. Or if we're going to supplement, it needs to be diverse sources of fiber. If you go to my page, I have a playlist called the gut health rabbit hole with lots of tips for improving your gut health.
