If you want to stop drinking, just get through today without drinking. Anybody who really develops a problematic relationship with alcohol, whether you call it alcohol, use disorder or alcoholism, kind of woven its tentacles into every aspect of your life, it's become the primary coping mechanism for stress. It's woven into, you know, your weekends and your social circle, and it's kind of dictates its claws into your life. The thought and idea of just giving it up forever is just too much. Trying to imagine a life without alcohol is very emotionally overwhelming. That emotional overwhelm will prevent people from ever getting started. Early on in the process, you really have to take it one day at a time, meaning that you don't have to think about what's going to happen tomorrow, what about Friday, how am I going to make it through this weekend, what about this vacation I have planned, what about this wedding, what about my friend's baby shower, your only commitment, your only goal, your only focus is that you're just not going to drink today.
